2009 Yamaha WR250X First Impressions

The Yamaha WR250X, a light Super Motard, floored me when I rode it in urban and country roads. I expected the bike to handle like a small racer, which it did - I did not expect a 250cc engine to shoot me past 100kph, cruise calmly at 130, and push up to 140 where my personal barn-door aerodynamics balanced out against available power. That was enough to make me wonder if you need more than 250cc in a modern engine to reach exciting performance levels on a light bike. [more]

2008 Yamaha Phazer RTX Trail Test

During the development of the new FX platform, Yamaha engineers had a specific goal in mind: to create a distinctively unique snowmobile -- kind of like the black sheep that everybody would be talking about. Like its ancestor, the Phazer of the 1980s, the new model has probably as many fans as critics. Since coming to market in March 2006, much has been said and written about its innovative styling, ATV-style riding position and unprecedented engine. [more]

2007 Yamaha Phazer GT Long-Term Trail Test (part one)

Yamaha literally reinvented the snowmobile with its new 2007 Phazer GT. In the 1980s, this model created a lot of stir thanks to a forward-thinking design, high levels of versatility and a very affordable price. At first, though, this sled had more critics than admirers. But two years after its introduction, the Phazer became one of the best sellers in its class. No wonder: it offered outstanding value and a whole new approach to snowmobiling. Today, Yamaha is trying to duplicate that success with an all-new, 4-stroke Phazer. [more]

2008 Yamaha RS Vector LTX Trail Test

Japanese manufacturer Yamaha offers more 4-stroke models than any competitor. These engines are not only environmentally friendly but also high performing. Thanks to its motorcycling expertise, Yamaha has become a master at creating powerful, efficient and clean engines. The RS Vector LTX is motivated by one of the brand's best 4-stroke powerplants ever. Unlike that of the Apex, the 3-cylinder Genesis 120 was specifically developed and built for snowmobile applications. It features 12 valves and a double overhead camshaft for a power rating of 120 horsepower. In order to reduce costs and remain competitive from a pricing standpoint, Yamaha chose to retain the carburetor-based fuel delivery system, consisting of three 40-mm Keihin CVK carburetors. [more]

2007 Yamaha V-Star 1300 Tourer Road Test

The all-new Yamaha V-Star 1300 improves a cruiser lineup that's already well stocked. Following the thundering success of the V-Star 1100 for many years, the Japanese manufacturer struck back with a new, more modern and more refined machine. In this segment, styling is crucial. That's why Yamaha went to great lengths to design a classic yet sleek motorcycle. You have to admit that the new V-Star is irresistibly stylish, with a flowing, slender profile that makes it look like it was handcrafted. The retro fuel tank is particularly graceful with a seamless, chrome-accented design. Engineers did their best to camouflage the radiator, ducts and hoses, giving the V-Star 1300 a cleaner appearance. The exhaust system is also well executed and reminiscent of the larger Road Liner's. 2008 Yamaha WR250X and WR250R Preview

The new Yamaha WR250X is one of the latest additions to the Canadian market, bringing a welcomed breath of fresh air. The departure of the XT350 many years ago left the poor little XT225 alone to fill the void. Although very user-friendly, this compact bike had been specifically designed for first-time riders -- therefore not for seasoned racers. Enthusiasts looking for a versatile dual-purpose motorcycle have long been waiting for a new Yamaha capable of conquering their hearts and souls. It has to be said that many XT350 and WR250F owners transplanted 17-inch wheels to create supermoto-type machines. The manufacturer took notice and made them standard with the new WR250X. This highly-anticipated bike is the first supermoto-type Yamaha to touch Canadian soil, much to the delight of fans of this sport. [more]
