Yamaha's Matt Weidinger shatters snowmobile record!

2-26-2010

by moto123.com

Matt Weidinger, a demonstrably snakebit snowmobiler from Toronto, obliterated the world record for the longest distance travelled in 24 hours. He was riding Yamaha's first-ever snowmobile with electric power steering (EPS), the 2011 Apex.

At 3 pm on February 17, 2010, Weidinger launched his attempt on a 10.4-kilometre track laid out with the help of the Ministry of Transport to ensure compliance with the standards of the Guinness Book of World Records. The next day, at around 10:30 am, he had already tied the previous mark of 2,372 kilometres set two weeks earlier. At the end of the 24 hours, Weidinger had covered exactly 2,904.6 kilometres.

Weidinger's record certainly confirmed the reliability of the new Yamaha Apex. The only mechanical action during the run was the changing of the front ski runners after about 14 hours.

On the significance of his record, Weidinger said: "Even with a power-assisted steering, setting this world record was no picnic. I just can't imagine being able to pull it off with a conventional steering."
