It's never easy to set up a comparative test matching up various ATVs. The most important part is the planning. As is often the case, preparation is the key to success. We have to call the manufacturers and request models that target about the same customers. Then, we must gather our staff and equipment, in addition to finding the perfect location to fully assess the performance of the machines.

The environment we chose for our comparative test is not certified by the federation.

Both the Yamaha Raptor 250 and Kymco Mongoose 250 do not comply with the rules of the federation regarding trail riding since neither a speedometer nor rearview mirrors are part of their standard features. Therefore, we had to choose a spot with narrow, muddy trails that are not certified by the federation, bumpy trails offering the possibility to shoot pictures and evaluate the suspensions as well as a sand pit with various jumps. We found the perfect setting near Lake Gagnon, located between the Papineau-Labelle wildlife preserve and the small town of Duhamel, Quebec. All the ingredients were there for a day full of thrills.

Solid reputation
The Kymco Mongoose 250 is built in Taiwan by Kwang Yang Motors. For many years, Kymco has been manufacturing scooters, motorcycles and ATVs. In Europe, this Asian company enjoys a solid reputation in terms of quality, reliability and styling. When Kymco designs and markets a bike, scooter or ATV, it makes sure to offer a safe, fuel-efficient, user-friendly and affordable product. This philosophy led to the creation of the new Mongoose 250.

Yamaha, meanwhile, requires no further presentation. This renowned Japanese manufacturer carefully listens to its customers and uses the information from surveys to design its new machines. With these important data, not to mention many years of expertise in developing motor vehicles, Yamaha always manages to reach its target customers. The all-new Raptor 250 is a great example: its familiar style and riding dynamics make it a fan favorite. It also meets the expectations of sand enthusiasts and jump addicts.

Faced with a series of obstacles, both ATVs proved up to the task.
