2013 Yamaha Grizzly 125 Preview

5-13-2013

by Guillaume Rivard , moto123.com

Returning unchanged for 2013, the Yamaha Grizzly 125 is arguably the ideal utility ATV for beginners and young riders. While styling and features are derived from the larger Grizzly 700, this entry-level model offers the convenience of a fully automatic transmission and the fuel efficiency of 2WD.

Entry-level doesn't necessarily mean cheap or weak, though. The 2013 Yamaha Grizzly 125 was built using the same superior engineering standards and materials as the entire Grizzly range. As far as the competition goes, it basically stands alone in its class. The closest alternatives might be the Arctic Cat 150 and Kymco MXU 150.

“Nearly bullet-proof”

That's how the Japanese manufacturer describes the torque-y four-stroke engine of the 2013 Yamaha Grizzly 125, which is said to deliver maximum durability and go-anywhere capability. This air-cooled, 124cc SOHC unit relies on a Mikuni carburetor and wet sump lubrication to keep things moving. A speed limiter screw on the throttle assembly allows the owner to regulate top speed.

Users will also appreciate the push-button electric starter, as well as the automatic transmission with reverse and chain final drive.

Friendly chassis

The 2013 Yamaha Grizzly 125's low seat height of only 685 mm is perfect for riders of all sizes, and offers a low centre of gravity that improves handling. With a light (wet) weight of 152 kg, this ATV also proves easy to toss around.

The 7” front wheels link to an independent, wishbone-type suspension, while the 10” rear wheels work with a sturdy swingarm that serves up 3.2” of travel. Braking performance comes from dual 100mm front drums and a single 130mm rear drum.

The wide fenders maximize splash protection, while the spacious floorboards are made of durable stainless steel. You also get front and rear racks to haul some cargo.

Bottom line
If you're looking for an affordable, extremely user-friendly utility ATV to go out on your first adventures or work around the cottage, the 2013 Yamaha Grizzly 125 can be yours for $4,799. Having said that; the more rugged, more powerful, Grizzly 300 is just $200 pricier.
