2009 Yamaha YZF-R1 Preview

10-20-2008

by moto123.com

Yamaha has released its all-new cutting-edge motorcycle ready to take on a class where innovation is the keyword. Last year, the YZF-R1 managed to distinguish itself from the competition by its finely drawn lines, its superior finish and its spectacular technical advancement. But the beast really stood out from the crowd thanks to the variable length intake tracts and the electronic management system of the 998-cc powerplant.

The new YZF-R1 has been completely revamped, it's key feature being a "crossplane crankshaft" geometry, based on the M1 MotoGP machine ridden to multiple world championships by Valentino Rossi.

Easier to use performance
The new 998-cc, 4-cylinder uses a 78 mm bore and 52mm bore, short-skirted forged pistons, and a 12.7:1 compression ration to produce 182 crankshaft hp at 12,500 rpm, with  maximum torque arriving at 10,000 rpm. Lower inertia in the endine and drivetrain has also improved throttle response on the new machine.

Inspired by the systems used on the M1 MotoGP racer, the new Mikuni electronic fuel injection system features two groups of injectors controlled by a powerful 32-bit microprocessor with adjustable mapping. The D-mode system features three settings: a B mode softens throttle response, a standard mode offers full power for better efficiency in all conditions, while an A mode ensures more incisive performance.

Redesigned frame
The new R1 is designed around an aluminum Deltabox V frame featuring improved rigidity in key areas through the use of different aluminum alloys according to the desired rigidity level. The engine is placed lower and nearer the front than on the 2008 model, improving forward weight bias as well as lowering the center of gravity of the drivetrain, while the 1415-mm wheelbase has remained unchanged despite the longer and lighter swingarm. According to Yamaha, the 190-mm Michelin rear tire has been developed specifically for the R1. The diameter of the front discs remains at 310 mm, but they have been lightened, and the 6-piston Monobloc calipers are identical to those of its predecessor.
