Harley-Davidson's ''Seventy-Two'' a flashback to the 70's

The Harley-Davidson® Seventy-Two motorcycle is a metal flake dream machine, a Sportster® motorcycle on a trip back to the days when the cool kids rode Sting-Ray bikes and the big boys parked choppers in a row on the curb. Those motorcycles were long and lean; candy-apple colour and gleaming chrome shimmering in hazy summer sunlight. From its Hard Candy Big Red Flake paint and ape bars to its narrow whitewall tires, the Seventy-Two model is a respectful nod to that era, and to the influence of the custom culture that still percolates today along Whittier Boulevard, the legendary cruising street in East Los Angeles, also known as Route 72. A new generation of custom builder is tapping into that era and making a fresh statement, not just in California but in garages across the country, even around the world. [more]

Over the course of my time with the 2011 Softail Convertible CVO, I was approached many times by curious onlookers that would admire the bike and inquire as to what model it was. Horrible conditions and constant showers could not dampen the spirits and enthusiasm of the Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada XR1200 contingent at its inaugural performance in the Canadian Superbike round one weekend of the 2011 season. Canada's Snowbirds did a fly-by, seeming to tear a hole in the unrelenting grey blanket that hovered overhead of Circuit ICAR in Mirabel, Quebec. 2011 Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide Ultra Review (video)

Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) represents Harley's nobility, producing extensively dressed-up and mechanically upgraded models in limited volumes that help keep exclusivity, demand and resale values high. The models rotate year-on-year, providing excellent examples for owners who like to personalize their own bike without going whole-hog (Pun intended). CVOs may be pricey ($41,919 for the CVO Road Glide Ultra, compared to $22,119 for the more popular Road Glide Custom and $26,119 for the Road Glide Ultra), but are in fact a great deal for the added value and the improvements you are buying. 2010 Harley-Davidson Cross Bones Review

For nearly as long as motorcycles have existed, so too have people who wished to modify them in order to suit their own personal tastes. Whether for comfort or style (rarely both it seems), riders would set to work swapping pipes, paint jobs, seats, handlebars and forks to set up their bike the way they wanted. Somewhere down the line a business savvy entrepreneur noticed the amount of money being funnelled into the aftermarket industry and couldn't see why a major manufacturer couldn't get in on some of that action. 2010 Harley-Davidson V-Rod First Impressions

The V-Rod, with liquid cooling, a different sound from a modern engine, fat rear tire and a somewhat squat look, does not share the iconic sound and looks of the more traditional air cooled Harleys. I have always liked the basic V-Rod, and got an opportunity to spend a long day riding it at Bike Week 2010. Interestingly enough, the V-Rod struck out from the sea of air cooled models, eliciting compliments from most non-Harley riders. [more]

2010 Harley-Davidson Forty-Eight First Impressions

Daytona, Florida. With post-war Harley looks and Sportster heritage dating back to the 1950s, the Forty-Eight is quite a stunner, don't you think? Based on the Sportster 1200, this bike stands out with a small orange tank, a retro-style solo seat, a truncated rear fender with no taillight as well as some massive tires. In my humble opinion, all these elements make the Forty-Eight one of the sharpest-looking Harleys out there. [more]

2010 Harley-Davidson CVO Street Glide Review

The 2010 Harley-Davidson CVO Street Glide is the second most expensive model in this year's Motor Corporation catalogue. Customer Vehicle Operations (CVO) is Harley-Davidson's showcase, where the in-house stylists let loose and decorate key models to produce exclusive, hi-cost machines. The bikes usually sell out every year; so the money is good, the customers are happy, and independent builders are frustrated by the great looks and integrity of the CVOs. Life is indeed good on this front. [more]

2010 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic Limited First Impressions

This is it, the latest ultimate expression of the Touring family - unless of course you go for the even more expensive and exclusive CVO models. The model name has changed, but the bike is still an Electra Glide under the skin, dressed up in attractive, three-tone paint jobs, new-look wheels, and extra lighting and chrome, and a 103cid engine, up from the 96cid unit in the standard Electra Glide models. We rode the bleu-mauve-black combo, while the red-black model may be more of a visual hit. [more]

In the constant churn of new and upgraded models, wheels, paint jobs, equipment and badging that produces the bikes that Harley buyers want year after year, The Motor Company re launches the Dyna Wide Glide model for 2010 after a one year absence, with evolutionary changes to the bike in terms of looks and external equipment. But make no mistake; the on-road behaviour of the 2010 is vastly improved over the older models, thanks to significant improvements to its suspension. [more]

The Big Adventure - Day 4

It's 9:30 am, the tank is full and today's ride promises to be very interesting. The Blue Ridge Parkway may be travelled by riders from all over the world, but I have to say the indications are easy to miss, like this green road sign (about 12x36 inches) hidden by the surrounding trees which forced me to make a U-turn! The Big Adventure - Day 3

After a reunion with my good friend California Don the day before, I started off at 9:30 am instead of the planned 6 am. The journey would take me from Louisville, KY, to Staunton, VA -- 760 kilometers on the same Interstate! The late departure combined with a little fatigue and a major accident on the highway made for an arrival time of 7 pm. On tap: the first section of the Blue Ridge Parkway... a ride of over 160 kilometers that culminates in Roanoke, in Southwestern Virginia. [more]

The Big Adventure - Day 2

After a much needed night's sleep, I pointed the Silver Beauty towards the Ohio River. From its source in the Appalachian Mountains, the Ohio flows towards the Mississippi, through one of the most important industrial areas of the US. In fact, the major cargo on the Ohio is coal on the way from West Virginia to the great urban centers and, more specifically, their coal-fired power stations. Man-made waterways link the Ohio to the Great Lakes, and access to Canada and the rest of the world. [more]

A new adventure - Appalachia aboard a Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide

Getting up at 4:30am for the drive to Toronto was brutal, given that I had hardly slept in anticipation of this trip. I was looking forward to seeing my good buddy "California Don" and the beautiful Kilby, riding to the middle of the US on some of the nicest roads I will find, aboard the 2009 Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide, complete with exclusive looks and a reputed 100hp. Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada Buell racing

Last year in the opening round of the Parts Canada Superbike series in Calabogie, Ontario, at the new Calabogie Motorsport track, Steve Crevier created history by giving the new Buell® 1125RTM motorcycle its first Superbike podium placing in the world. In typical Crevier style, he did it with a dramatic pass on the last lap, and - to add a heroic notation here - he did it on DOT tires. [more]

2009 Harley-Davidson 883 Iron First Impressions

In the case of this bike, familiarity does not breed contempt, as the latest Sportster variant from The Motor Company, dubbed 883 Iron, turned out to be more bike than I expected when I rode it over Daytona Bike week. With a low-low rear, the Iron takes aims at two parallel segments, the all-black slammed cruiser crowd, and shorter riders looking for a machine they can manage easily at low speed and at rest. 2009 Harley-Davidson XR1200 Review

When the XR1200 was first shown to the public in 2007, Americans immediately stated whingeing about not being able to buy one. This throwback to the classic XR750 Flat Tracker seemed like the standard machine that prospective buyers jumping the fence from the rice burners were looking for - and H-D were making it available only in Europe for 2008, with no commitment regarding distribution in America later on.
