Much to my surprise during our 50cc scooter compare (LIEN), the XF50 C3, affectionately known as the Cube, proved to be just as quick as and far more practical than the best-selling 50cc scooter on the market, the Yamaha BWs 50. I had been looking to sample this unorthodox baby for quite some time, as it promised greater value than its more popular stable mate. [more]

After 11 successful years with Yamaha competing in international Enduro and Rally-Raid events, David Frétignié is moving to BMW to achieve his dream of winning the Dakar, where he's already gathered four wins in the 450-cc class in 2004, 2005 and 2009. We remember him riding a two-wheel-drive YZF450, unbeatable in the mud and shifting sand but overwhelmed in wide open spaces, where the big 650-cc (or 800 according to some?), single-cylinder KTMs dominated. Call them Adventure, Enduro or Dual-Purpose, bikes with long travel suspensions and big, torquey engines are popular these days. ATV manufacturers have been fighting a displacement war for the last 13 years, as it seems they all want to build the biggest, most powerful engine. The Yamaha WR250X, a light Super Motard, floored me when I rode it in urban and country roads. I expected the bike to handle like a small racer, which it did - I did not expect a 250cc engine to shoot me past 100kph, cruise calmly at 130, and push up to 140 where my personal barn-door aerodynamics balanced out against available power. That was enough to make me wonder if you need more than 250cc in a modern engine to reach exciting performance levels on a light bike. [more]

Japanese manufacturer Yamaha offers more 4-stroke models than any competitor. These engines are not only environmentally friendly but also high performing. Thanks to its motorcycling expertise, Yamaha has become a master at creating powerful, efficient and clean engines. The RS Vector LTX is motivated by one of the brand's best 4-stroke powerplants ever. Unlike that of the Apex, the 3-cylinder Genesis 120 was specifically developed and built for snowmobile applications. It features 12 valves and a double overhead camshaft for a power rating of 120 horsepower. In order to reduce costs and remain competitive from a pricing standpoint, Yamaha chose to retain the carburetor-based fuel delivery system, consisting of three 40-mm Keihin CVK carburetors. [more]

Following the thundering success of the V-Star 1100 for many years, the Japanese manufacturer struck back with a new, more modern and more refined machine. In this segment, styling is crucial. That's why Yamaha went to great lengths to design a classic yet sleek motorcycle. You have to admit that the new V-Star is irresistibly stylish, with a flowing, slender profile that makes it look like it was handcrafted. The retro fuel tank is particularly graceful with a seamless, chrome-accented design. Engineers did their best to camouflage the radiator, ducts and hoses, giving the V-Star 1300 a cleaner appearance. The exhaust system is also well executed and reminiscent of the larger Road Liner's.
