2009 Kymco Xciting 500 Ri Review

4-2-2009

by Amyot Bachand , moto123.com

Canadians now have a new maxi scooter to get excited about - the... Xciting 500 Ri, a model that Kymco believes will redefine the sport scooter segment.

The 2009 Kymco Xciting 500 Ri has many obvious qualities.

Target Market
At $7,995, the Xciting 500 Ri occupies an enviable price point, below the Japanese competition, in the growing maxi-scooter segment. The classic design is intended for intermediate as well as experienced riders, with build quality, fit and finish leave little to be desired.

Chassis
The steel frame features a fork with 110 mm of suspension travel, and a rear shock with 100 mm of travel and four-position adjustable preload.

Dual front discs and two-piston calipers team up with a single rear disc and front-rear cross linking to stop the machine effectively under all load condition, and aluminum rims (15 in up front and 14 the rear) are within the norm for large, high performance scooter.

Drive Train
The 498.5-cc, single-cylinder engine produces approximately 38 hp, an impressive number for a reliable, fuel-injected and responsive unit, linked to the fully automatic CVT transmission to pass on the power to the rear wheel.

Ergonomic
I liked the riding position, low seat height (780 mm) and adjustable backrest that can be made comfortable tall and shorter riders. The handlebar angle can be adjusted to optimise comfort and precision for riders of all shapes and sizes.

The ignition key opens the under-seat storage compartment, large enough for S- and M-sized full-face helmets, backpack or grocery bags, and three other storage areas are provided, for your cell phone, and for smaller objects at the front of the seat and in the front fairing.

At 200 Kg ready to roll, the Xciting 500 Ri requires muscle to put the machine on its center stand, while the side stand is quite easy to use. The comprehensive instrument panel is easy to read, save for the miniscule numbers on the speedometer.
