NASCAR: Kyle Busch needed a GPS to get to his garage after shootout

2-13-2011

by Lewis Franck

One of the oddest vignettes of the Bud Shootout Saturday evening was the sight of Kyle Busch getting lost in the maze of the Daytona garages after his car was mostly crippled in the race.

The incident started after Busch’s car was turned, on lap 37, by Mark Martin making it barely driveable. Martin explained: “I really didn’t do anything different than I had all night. I don’t know how that happened.”

Busch continued for a short time, but, gave up and headed for his garage.

The complex has two sets of garages one for the Sprint Cup cars and one for the Nationwide Cars (but used by ARCA this weekend).

At a night event, Busch’s car, without the benefit of headlights, was driving, literally, in the dark.

“The best footage of the night is probably me getting back to the garage area because I got lost everywhere. I was like, ‘Man, this gate is going to be open -- nope that gate is not open. I’ll go right here -- no.’ I probably split TV cords somewhere with the splitter and how low these things are to the ground. Hopefully nobody is too mad at me!”

"It was a maze back there. I had no idea where I was going," he said.

He could have used a GPS, or at least a spotlight!
