BMW has just announced new versions of their modern day classic touring and dual-purpose models, the R1200RT, R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure.

The new R1200GS appears to be somewhat closer to the ground than previous models, a happy medium for the great majority of riders, who use the bike almost exclusively on paved surfaces. That said, we can still see that plenty of ground clearance is still available, certainly enough to turn the bumpiest roads into smooth carpets.

The upgraded engine on the new machines uses the HP2 Sport-developed twin overhead chain-driven camshafts (DOHC) per cylinder, to deliver 4% more torque than the previous engine, with a maximum of 88.5 lb-ft at an unchanged 6,000 rpm, and a usable rev range that now reaches 8,500 rpm (500 more than the older model). Maximum output remains at 110 hp, now at 7,750 rpm (previously 7,500 rpm). These torque and horsepower figures apply to all three models; and BMW did not mention any programming adaptations for the different missions of the three models.

The best news regarding the engine is the significant increase in torque at low and medium engine speeds, where people actually ride every day.

The latest generation R1200RT also features improved aerodynamics, a dominant front headlight, electrically adjustable contoured windshield, optional ESA II Electronic Suspension Adjustment, and a new Multi-Controller for the improved sound system, featuring interfaces for an MP3 player, an iPod or USB, as well as conventional CD player.

The GS models also feature switchable ABS and Enduro ESA, Tyre Pressure Control and Automatic Stability Control, as well as an extensive range of equipment and luggage solutions

No word yet from BMW Canada on availability and pricing for the new models

The older RT model already featured the most sophisticated aerodynamics on any bike, with a comfortable and stable bubble for the rider and passenger. It looks as though BMW moved up another notch in sophistication on the new models – great news for lovers of comfortable touring.
