2015 Can-Am Outlander 1000 6x6 XT Preview

The all-new, 6-wheeled Outlander 6x6 XT marks the first time a Can-Am ATV has been developed outside North America, more specifically at BRP's manufacturing facility in Rovaniemi, Finland. Based on the SST G2 Outlander 4x4, but featuring an additional set of rear wheels, it's being hailed at “the toughest, most versatile ATV” they’ve ever made.

One thing's for sure: No job seems too tough for the Outlander 6x6 XT to handle.

While a 62-hp Rotax V-Twin 650 engine comes standard, we'll focus on the larger model and its 82-hp Rotax 1000 V-Twin for the purpose of our preview. This liquid-cooled, 976cc, 8-valve, SOHC, twin-cylinder unit teams up with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) that features a new lower L-gear to allow for an increased workload and a softer engagement for smooth starts. Meanwhile, a Visco-Lok QE auto-locking front differential enables both 4x6 and 6x6 operation.

By the way, the engine's air intake, CVT inlets, and CVT exhaust have been positioned as high as possible to improve breathing while navigating wet and muddy conditions.

Can-Am innovated with the unique Double Torsional Trailing Arm Independent (TTI2) rear suspension -- the only independent setup that eliminates scrub and camber changes, meaning the wheels pivot up and down rather than in a butterfly motion. This ensures the Outlander 6x6 XT will move only in the direction you point it. Offering 5-way preload adjustable shocks and 9.3” of travel, it promises to soak up rough terrain while keeping you comfortable and focused on the trail.

Up front, the double A-arm suspension (9.0” of travel) includes dive-control geometry for better cornering as well as vehicle-braking dynamics. The use of a shortened spindle, along with anti-kickback geometry, provides a better steering feel.

While we're on the subject, the Outlander's Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering (MIN, MED, and MAX) is designed to offer less assist at high speeds for better precision and more assist at low speeds for easier steering. Direct Link technology ensures fast response and less kickback, too.

Elsewhere, there's a quick-release sway bar allowing owners to adjust the amount of articulation from the TTI2 rear suspension to improve the ride for both heavy loads or when unloaded. Speaking of which, the 2015 Can-Am Outlander 1000 6x6 XT comes with a multipurpose cargo box with two storage levels, 700lb (318kg) of total hauling capacity, and tilt-assist dumping. Its standard side panels will enable you to create a flatbed in seconds. You can also add accessories such as a cargo cover, tailgate extension, and more.

On top of all that, expect the largest towing capacity of any Can-Am ATV (750kg or 1,654lb), and a 3,000lb WARN winch as standard equipment. Meanwhile, the instrument panel is as comprehensive as you can get.

While the base 650 model starts at $15,249, the more powerful 2015 Can-Am Outlander 1000 6x6 XT retails from $17,399.
