2012 Can-Am DS 450 Preview

6-18-2012

by Guillaume Rivard , moto123.com

The 2012 Can-Am DS 450 is BRP's sportiest ATV. This race-ready quad is designed to get you out in front of the pack while setting new standards for the industry with the first no-weld, all-aluminum frame, hollow rear axle and inverted brake callipers.

Leading chassis
A twin pyramidal aluminum structure makes the DS frame stronger yet much lighter than a traditional ladder frame, while the hollow rear axle reduces the unsprung weight. Together with optimized mass centralization, they contribute to the best power-to-weight ratio of any 450-class sport ATV.

Elsewhere, the R-type forged aluminum double A-arm front suspension teams up with an R-type cast-aluminum swingarm rear suspension. The inverted brake callipers allow for larger brake discs (dual 182mm front, single 198mm rear) resulting in improved stopping power and feel. ITP Holeshot SR tires wrap polished aluminum wheels.

Other chassis highlights include a 33'' seat height that lowers the centre of gravity, while the seat itself is long and flat to allow plenty of body movements. Racers will also appreciate the detachable headlights and interchangeable fenders.

As for the engine, this Can-Am boasts a liquid-cooled 449cc Rotax 4-TEC single-cylinder with electronic fuel injection and a 46mm throttle body. It produces 45.3 horsepower through a 5-speed manual transmission with foot shifter and manual clutch lever.

Three-headed monster
A trio of models is available, starting with the base DS 450 which rides on Kayaba HPG aluminum piggyback front and rear shocks. Next up is the DS 450 X xc, which particularly excels on tight trails. This one adds an aluminum skid plate, front bumper and nerf bars.

And then there's the range-topping DS 450 X mx, which delivers improved racing performance. This mean machine and dirt jump specialist features a lower 31.5'' seat height, 2'' longer double A-arms with adjustable caster and camber as well as premium Fox shocks with 10.7'' of travel up front and 11.1'' in the back.

The 2012 Can-Am DS 450 starts at $8,499.
