2011 Harley-Davidson XR1200X Review

5-17-2011

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

On the road, the XR1200X handles more easily than its predecessor, brakes with more power and leans in corners like no other Harley ever could. Through twists and turns, it manages to keep a solid pace while letting the footpegs and part of your boots grind the pavement.

There's a definite addiction in exploiting the meaty section of the 1,200-cc engine's powerband, from 3,000 to 5,500 rpm. However, the slow-shifting, XL-derived transmission remains more suited for gentle riding than sporty action. In the fifth and final gear, the big twin stretches to 7,000 rpm and happily propels the 249-kg beast towards 200 km/h.

Blasting or cruising?
The 2011 Harley-Davidson XR1200X stays the course better and comes to a full stop quicker than the old model. Despite its above-average weight, it proves as docile and progressive as the best motorcycles in the segment thanks to the new floating disc braking system.

Opened up on a track, the X displays much virility, the rear shock stays firm and the substantial mass can be felt through lean changes. On the other hand, the bike shows bulletproof poise and composure that make manoeuvres extremely safe.

Just like its parent, the XR1200X also loves to cruise on the open road. With the chest leaning a tad forward, the knees slightly bent and the feet tucked under the butt, the rider enjoys a mildly sporty stance. While it does very little to protect against the elements, this motorcycle strikes an interesting balance between ride quality and handling performance when set at the softest – the way to go for individuals who want to do some laid-back touring at the helm of an unorthodox yet charismatic two-wheeler.

Bottom line
Uniquely styled and inspired, the 2011 Harley-Davidson XR1200X stands out from every other product in the catalogue. It performs effectively both on the road and the track, maybe not on the same level as European and Japanese roadsters, but it admirably perpetuates the sporty tradition of Harley-Davidson that began with the XR750. At last, riders can have a real blast in corners with a Harley.

Plus
Powerful yet progressive brakes
Sharp, stable handling in corners
Potent engine with classic H-D character
Adjustable Showa suspension

Less
Above-average weight
