2010 Can-Am Outlander Max 800R EFI LTD Review

2-2-2010

by Pascal Bastien , Auto123.com

More and more long wheelbase ATVs are available on the market today, designed specifically for riding tandem. The Can-Am Outlander Max 800R EFI LTD, one of the most sought-after models of this new breed of two-passenger ATVs, tackles 2010 with significant improvements over the older model, such as a new Air Control Suspension (ACS) at the rear, new Dynamic Power Steering (DPS) and a more efficient front differential.

Modern, simple and robust looks, and creature comforts for the passenger.

The industry strongest engine
Beneath its utilitarian guise hides the latest evolution of Rotax’s 800cc V-Twin engine, the “R”, which kicks out 71 ponies, 9% more than the old H.O. version. This newest offering features a larger air filter and intake manifold, new camshafts, optimized ECU mapping, and new 46-mm throttle body with more efficient vertical flow.

The improved Visco-Lok QE (Quick Engage) front differential reacts faster to a loss of traction than the old, slower-reacting differential, adding to the stability and agility of the machine.

Improved SST chassis
The Outlander Max 800R EFI LTD uses an elongated version of the efficient SST chassis. It is composed of a vertical rectangle steel loop, 300mm wide by 15mm thick, to which the engine, suspensions, body and other elements are attached. The smooth underside of the chassis allows the machine to slide over higher obstacles, rather than get caught up on the lower traverse tubes of a more conventional multi tube chassis.

The Max 800R LTD has also uses Can-Am’s very first electric power steering system. The Dynamic Power Steering (DPS) system allows riders to choose comfort and performance settings according to their preferences at the touch of a button located under the left index finger. The systems ergonomics are questionable, however, as the DPS control button points towards the front of the machine and not towards the rider, completely masking the setting information.

The new suspension settings coupled with Power Steering increase comfort and pleasure on any trail.
