Suzuki introduces the new-for-2009 Gladius SFV650, a nearly naked middleweight featuring the well liked 650cc V-Twin engine borrowed from the SV650, as well as a unique styling, in a user-friendly package. Oh, and let's not forget the buyer-friendly price. The new bike takes dead aim at popular standard models from Ducati (The Monster 696) and Kawasaki (Ninja 650R), with a stylish machine of it's own.

With 66.6 hp on tap and more torque than the SV650, expect the Gladius to be extremely user-friendly for novices and urban users, with relaxed touring also in the cards given a few added accessories such as a wind screen and various luggage items.

The new streamlined bodywork features an angled multi reflector headlamp, and a sweeping side profile "à la Ducati". The ergonomics are aimed at novice as well as shorter riders, with a slim fuel tank and saddle, rounded forward edges and a low 796mm seat height, to ensure that virtually everyone can comfortably put both feet on the ground. Handlebar and foot pegs are also positioned to provide comfortable and relaxed seating, a key feature for beginners unaccustomed to maintaining the level of concentration required to ride safely.

Running gear and suspension components were selected with an eye on low costs while still providing excellent dynamic characteristics. While the steel trellis frame is heavier than an aluminium one, and two piston calipers are less desirable than four pistons units, handling should be effective and without major faults. Spring preload is adjustable front and rear, rear springing works through an effective progressive linkage, and ABS is available at extra cost. Suzuki engineers chose wisely, using proven designs and components from the SV650 to arrive at an exciting new model with the SFV650.

The SFV650 promises to grab a good portion of the middleweight market segment with a price of $8889. Aimed at less performance-oriented riders, Suzuki has created an inexpensive, comfortable, friendly and fun naked bike for 2009.
