2009 KTM 525 XC Racing Review

4-13-2010

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

Moto123 – Any racer knows the value of a smartly-calibrated, high-performing suspension, especially in endurocross-type events. How competent and adjustable is the suspension on this ATV?

SL
– The suspension offers spring preload, rebound damping as well as low-speed/high-speed compression. And unlike the adjustable shocks of some manufacturers, you really feel the effect of a single-click change.

From the get-go, I did find the springs a bit too stiff for me in the Enduro race. I kept tweaking the front and rear settings over and over before finally settling for a compromise solution. I think KTM’s factory suspension (Öhlins) has been calibrated for a Pro rider, meaning in better shape than me and fully able to take full advantage of the performance potential of the machine.

An effective suspension makes full use of all the available travel, especially at the rear to optimize forward and side traction, as in this picture where the rear tires handle close to 100% of the work. (Photo: KTM)

Moto123 – How would you sum up the KTM 525 XC?

SL – The 525 XC is one of the most capable stock ATVs I have ever ridden. Amazingly, you can buy one through a dealer on Friday and enter it as in a full blown enduro on Saturday morning! Personally, I’m a lot more used to this type of racing on a motorcycle, yet I managed to finish in the top 10. With more training, I would’ve cracked the top 5. Impressive for a stock ATV!

Plus
Overall effectiveness and capability
Multiple adjustments that really make a difference
Fat useable torque curve
Electric starter and reverse on a race-ready ATV
Quality components

Minus
No safety net under the footpegs
Stiff springs not made for chickens – replace them or get in better shape!
