2009 BMW HP2 Sport Review

7-22-2009

by Marc Cantin , moto123.com

The six gearbox ratios are spread effectively to ease take offs from a standstill as well as keep the engine on the boil in whatever gear you choose. The smooth shifting gearbox is made even more so by the electronic assistant on upshifts, whereby a sensor detects the movement of the shift lever and cuts the engine power electronically just enough to allow for a smooth transition at any speed. Newcomers to this system must learn not to close the throttle when up shifting, as that causes confusion in the system - just pull on the shift lever (Or push down with the "Racer" modification that set 1st gear up and the next five down) and you will hardly feel the upshift.

With Öhlins shocks and other components of similar high quality, you just know that the HP2 will work.

Chassis
With Öhlins shocks, Brembo brakes and other components of similar high quality, you just know that the HP2 will work. The fully machined adjustable footrests, featuring an exclusive shift pedal adjustment mechanism, are a work of art, a joy to behold as much as are the steel tube frame, carbon fiber bodywork and tail section, flat display panel, and high quality switching and adjustable hand levers.

Looks and sound
The Sport is definitely a show stopper, especially in that great BMW trademark white with blue trim livery. The single sided swingarm looks the job, allowing the blue wheel to stand out on the left side. Add the high exhaust, with a unique grumble that stands out without disturbing, just right to cause heads to turn and to produce envious looks everywhere rather than annoyance.

Ergos
The riding position is definitely sporting, as much as on any other Japanese or European sportbike. One thing is sure: only the thinnest and fittest should attempt to tour on this bike. But get close to a track or a nice twisty road, and any pain turns to bliss. Just adjust the footrests to get comfortable - without taking the "sport" out of the position, and GO! And forget about a co-rider on this single-seater - no passenger footpegs or seat!

On the street and track
With 133 usable horsepower and a wide range of suspension setups, this machine is in fact very user-friendly. This suspension just works - on the track, in the city or out on the highway, with fully adjustable Öhlins front and rear and enough travel to play with. This high quality suspension, combined with the light weight of the HP2 Sport, could be the most important qualities of this machine. Nasty surfaces are more manageable than with just about any street bike I have ever ridden. There is also plenty of usable torque to get you out of a hole with minimum shifting; enough to forget what gear you are in.

The Sport is definitely a show stopper, especially in that great BMW trademark white with blue trim livery.
