2009 Kymco MXU 500 IRS and MXU 375 First Impressions

1-8-2009

by Amyot Bachand , moto123.com

MXU 375
With much more generous proportions than the Mongoose, nearing those of the MXU 500, the new MXU 375 fills a gap in the Kymco lineup and represents an excellent alternative to the small Japanese models. It should quickly carve out a place for itself in the Canadian market thanks to its well targeted size, plentiful standard features and suggested retail price of only $5,499.

The new MXU 375 fills a gap in the Kymco lineup.

The MXU 375's lines are rounder and much more flowing than those of its 500-cc older brother. Its modern headlights and heavy-duty bumper give it a great strapping figure. This good-looking ATV will definitely be turning heads.

The smallest MXU is powered by a one-cylinder, oil- and air-cooled, 366.9-cc engine with a four-valve cylinder head. The engine produces surprising power for its small size and allows the MXU 375 to clear obstacles without trouble and easily reach 90 km/h. The MXU 375's turning lock seemed a little too wide to me, but a more complete trial on a narrow trail next summer will allow me to confirm or invalidate this first impression.

Common ground
The two machines use a CVT transmission featuring two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive settings activated by a button on the right grip. Efficient for standing starts and precise when power needs to be parceled out, the transmission ensures a friendly driving experience no matter the conditions, something fans of tricky trails and big jobs will appreciate.

The addition of these two new utility ATVs qualified for leisure endeavours round out the Taiwanese manufacturer's lineup nicely. The MXU 500 IRS and MXU 375 are aimed at consumers looking for a well equipped, comfortable and, especially, affordable ride, and Kymco always manages to surprise us in this regard.
