2009 Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Voyager ABS

10-1-2009

by Marc Cantin , moto123.com

The Voyager’s ECU code also addresses a key safety issue on large cruisers: too much engine braking that can lock up the rear wheel when shutting the throttle on slippery surfaces, even without applying the rear brake. The smart ECU code (See the “Engine Braking” box for details) smoothes out engine behaviour when you cut the gas - no more face into the windshield or the passenger’s helmet hitting yours!

Classic sit up, comfortable riding position, for a burly rider such as myself, and for a passenger.

A new six speed gearbox and a drive belt complete the smooth transmission of power to the rear wheel, even allowing clutch less shifts if you so desire and know how to synchronize the lot.

New, light multi tube platform + outstanding braking
A new, light and suitably stiff frame (+40% over older models) links the front and rear suspensions effectively, with enough flex to help absorb the worst bumps on the road without getting into nasty wobbles.

The 45mm fork can be set at four different preload positions, while both rear shocks feature adjustable preload using air pressure, and four different rebound settings.

The new K-ACT braking system (See sidebar) works with ABS to ensure maximum retardation and the safest possible braking under normal and, more importantly, emergency situations.

You need or want it, and the Voyager has it:
· A classic 50s automobile dashboard
· Analog dials for speed, rpm and coolant temperature
· A multi-function LCD display in the center of the instrument console, controlled by switches on the right handle, showing which gear is engaged, fuel level, clock, odometer, dual trip meters, remaining range and average fuel consumption
· A twin speakers radio (FM/AM/WX) with compatibility with an iPod, XM tuner or CB radio unit,
· Electronic Cruise control
· Dual 35W fog lights

All the buttons and switches that control this electronic maze are within easy reach as well as intuitive to use. The full body work – you can hardly call it a fairing! - features lower leg shields with air vents that you can open to allow airflow to the legs, and a large, fixed high windshield that forces the rider to look through it at all times. An height-adjustable one would sure fill the bill. I know, I know – extra cost and weight! Pass the accessories catalogue please.

We all agree that the instruments, displays and accessories are complete. I also found out that they were easy to use.
