2009 KTM 690 Duke Review

7-28-2009

by Marc Cantin , moto123.com

And it tops out at some 200 kph - enough for the street and a joy on the track, so much so that I would love to see a well sorted 690 Duke and a good rider race cookie-cutter 600s on a tight track.

This is a machine that requires commitment from the rider to get the best out of it.

Commitment, not compromise
This is a machine that requires commitment on the part of KTM to build as well as from the rider to get the best out of it. The 690 Duke is aimed at a narrow market of riders who can afford an outstanding play bike for the pavement. Riding it forces you to adapt to its extreme characteristics, not the other way around.

When you make the commitment, the bike responds in kind, lots of it.

Love that torque and power
Right now response on setting 2,
Effective suspensions
Agile handling
Specialised high performance bike - experienced riders please

Not uncomfortable, just needs some getting-used-to
Single purpose bike - fun, not longer range touring
Specialised high performance bike - no squids please

A special moment!

I have always had a thing for big singles, not because of their power but rather because of the way the torque is always right there when you need it. I also appreciate simplicity - one seat, one piston, one exhaust pipe, one disc in front...

I just had to get my hands on the new-gen 690 Duke, especially after an earlier KTM single had almost succeeded in vibrating my hands off.

Here I am in second gear, barely moving when I crest a small rise along the entrance to the St-Eustache track, and the front wheel is in the air. I calm things down, go for third and get the exact same reaction from the front wheel on another small rise. I am still in the driveway and my Fun Meter is already maxed out. Wow!

Like all my beloved singles, this one is not a rocket, spoiled that I am by big-inch multis, but that torque comes in with a really nice hit. Add the short and stiff chassis, the wide bars, and the sporting wheels and tires, and every molehill can be turned into an adventure. Add the great anchors and the adjustable and effective suspension, and you are really on to something special.

OK, so this bike is not destined for the dirt, and I forgive that, but if you have some crazy streak in you that needs to be released, this is your bike!
