2009 KTM 525 XC Racing Review

4-13-2010

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

SL – Back at the KTM stand after a few minutes of warm-up, I realized just how accurate the promos were. The 525 XC comes out as a genuine race-ready ATV with all the usual setting to account for track conditions and rider size: axle width, ride height, handlebars, brake and clutch levers, and of course the suspension — it can all easily be adjusted and fine-tuned.

– Considering that the engine is derived from the brand’s motorcycles, whereas the competition uses ATV-specific engines, did you feel at some sort of disadvantage?

SL – Not really. The engine impressed me on several fronts, delivering plenty of low- and mid-range torque while also feeling right at home near the redline, enough in fact to keep pace with other engines specifically tuned for racing. In addition, the electronic ignition system offers a calmer mode for newbies, and a more aggressive mode unleashing all of the engine’s fury for us “Experienced” jockeys. In this "performance" mode, the super-fat torque curve allowed me to ride in second gear for more than 80 percent of the race, which made riding simpler. In fact, I only used first gear to get my butt out of bad spots.

– Tell me about the gearbox and the clutch.

SL – The tranny delivers precise shifts and the ratio spacing between the first and second gears seemed perfectly suited for endurocross racing. I particularly appreciated the electric starter and reverse gear when I jammed into a tree; I was able to resume the race not two seconds later without even having to get off the ATV. Also, the hydraulically-controlled clutch felt bulletproof, easy-to-use and modulate.

Moto123 – KTM is known for its high-performance braking systems. What about the 525 XC?

SL – Oh, it’s phenomenal! I just used one finger on the lever at all times. The braking system is impressively steady and fade-free, and the lever feel never changes from one lap to the next. Braking power is also very steady and generous. Like the rest of the machine, nothing but quality components are being used, including highly-effective braided lines.
