2009 KTM 250 XCF-W Review

10-16-2009

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

When rider and bike become one
The hard seat lends itself to aggressive trail riding and supplies a minimum amount of comfort on long outings, but like most enduro bikes, its high, 985-mm perch can be disheartening for less than expert-level riders. Beginners or shorter owners may want to lower the machine a bit to facilitate putting a foot out when cornering. The dash delivers all the information required for racing, while the tapered handlebars are three-way adjustable. What’s more, the 250 XCF-W comes with a switch and all the necessary wiring to install head and tail lamps.

The handlebar/seat/fuel tank/foot rest combo offers exemplary race ergonomics so that riders truly feel like they become one with the bike. Whether sitting in preparation for a race start, carving out a corner, or standing up to clear a jump, you always feel ready to go on the attack with this KTM.

On the trail

The diminutive 4-stroke engine remains easy to use at all times. Flexible at low rpm, it becomes gradually livelier as you sail up the rev range, and feels like it’ll never stop. It’s easy to deal out the power, no matter the rpm, and is forgiving if you push too hard on slippery surfaces. Tackling tight and muddy sections becomes a pleasure on this bike. Throttle response and minimal engine braking are surprising – it almost feels like you are dealing with a 2-stroke engine.

The new KTM shows no mercy toward its rivals, thanks to light and efficient underpinnings that makes it incredibly nimble and efficient on all types of off-road terrain. The new suspension settings are impressive in their flexibility, and travel is excellent. Not only is it more comfortable, it is also less brutal over bumps and makes the rider’s job easier by improving rideability on any surface. A true delight!
