2009 Ducati Hypermotard 1100 S First Impressions

8-21-2009

by Marc Cantin , moto123.com

Ducati produces a variety of models with one apparent goal in mind: having the exact toy for every type of “sporting” rider, from the track-only serious rider looking for race-like behaviour, as in 1098 S or R for example, to a comfortable touring machine like the Multistrada.

The Hypermotard comes with the sharp looks as well as a Full Monte of high quality components for such a high performance machine.

The Hypermotard 1100s fits somewhere in the middle of this spread, with excellent performance, fantastic agility and handling, a controlled and comfortable behaviour on smooth as well as bumpy roads, and all in a tight, efficient package. The Hypermotard presents Ducati’s interpretation of the growing large-engine Supermoto segment, as well including all of the personality traits that we know and appreciate about the brand.

Ducati drivetrain like we love them
Any Ducati engine must abide by the family tradition; call it market image if you will. This means a 90 degree twin, desmodromic valve operation, great if busy looks, compact packaging, excellent efficiency and performance, and air or liquid cooling to accommodate the mission and power level required by the different models.

Ducati duly developed an air-cooled engine for the milder family members such as this Hypermotard and the Monster 1100, delivering more than adequate power (90hp @ 7750 rpm), an impressive 76 lb-ft of torque at a low and useful 4750 rpm, and, most important of all for a street oriented machine, a nice and fat torque curve from just below 3,000 the way up to 6,000 rpm, where power takes over.

As you can imagine, the six ratios in the gearbox are well spaced out and shifting is a right-now affair with or without using the light clutch on upshifts.

The $980 Ducati accessory slipper clutch will add to safety and ease of use when entering corners hard as well as on slippery surfaces.

The traditional Ducati L twin delivers more than adequate power (90hp @ 7750 rpm) and an impressive 76 lb-ft of torque at a low and useful 4750 rpm.
