2008 Yamaha FJR1300 AS Review

8-4-2008

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

Princely comfort
While the windshield still generates irritating pressure on the back of the rider's head when fully upright, it has the merit of offering near-perfect protection against the elements. The middle cowl even features small deflectors on each side to protect the knees during cold, rainy days.

The height-adjustable seat is exemplary and offers princely comfort; yet, it's firm enough and not too wide to allow sporty riding. The passenger also gets a comfortable seat and, on top of that, a sturdy grab rail. The forward-mounted passenger footrests enhance comfort for sure, but they impede the rider's leg movement in sharp turns. Speaking of which, the FJR1300 is very agile for such a big bike. It enters corners fairly easily and precisely while exiting with surprising effortlessness.

The rider's seat offers princely comfort; yet, it's firm enough.

As for storage, the FJR could put a premium sedan to shame. In addition to the power-adjustable windshield, the list of features includes heated handgrips, adjustable headlights, a center stand, body-colored rigid saddlebags that can hold a full-face helmet as well as a glove box that locks automatically when you turn the ignition off. Let's not forget the ultra-sophisticated, highly-effective antilock braking system. Repeated emergency maneuvers were not enough to make this Yamaha veer off course; it remained easy to control at all times.

A true GT
The 2008 Yamaha FJR1300 AS is a premium motorcycle delivering pleasant thrills and touring-like comfort. Build quality and riding dynamics easily justify the asking price. The little annoyances of the YCC-S transmission at low speed are quickly overshadowed by the excellent ride comfort and user-friendliness. Clearly, the FJR1300 gets better with age. It's equally convenient, better executed, better equipped and, above all, more pleasant to ride than ever. A smart choice for sporty riders who want to travel comfortably.
