2008 KTM 990 Super Duke Review (video)

Quality parts
My tester featured a host of carbon fiber components and a magnificent Akrapovic exhaust system. The latter, made of titanium and carbon fiber, enhances the racing style of the Super Duke while producing a hoarse sound typical of the LC8. There are also plenty of high-caliber parts from renowned brands. The NeKen handlebar, Magura clutch system, Brembo brakes and WP suspension say a lot about the level of performance you should expect. These unique features easily justify the price of this beautiful Austrian machine.

Sophisticated suspension
The Super Duke is well equipped as far as suspensions go. The 48-mm USD White Power inverted front fork can be adjusted by way of two small knobs on top of the fork's head. In the back is an adjustable single shock with remote reservoir. This suspension system has been tuned for aggressive, sporty riding. Therefore, expect limited yet reasonable ride comfort from this spirited performer.

Ultra-rigid
In the braking department, the 990 Super Duke gets a Brembo package including 320-mm dual discs with 4-piston callipers up front and a 240-mm single disc in the back. This strong, fade-free braking system offers surprising rider-friendliness. It's powerful yet easy to modulate, which serves to increase confidence on the road.

The ultra-rigid frame made of molybdenum-chrome also makes the Super Duke agile and precise; attacking corners at their apex from a fairly high speed is easy -- not to mention getting out of these corners. The wheelbase is by far the shortest of all KTM models, which partly explains its amazing responsiveness when aggressively ridden.

The streetfighter-type riding position offered by the Super Duke is one of the most natural positions you'll ever find. The handlebar is ideally positioned and not too wide, while the forward-mounted footpegs allow a comfortable leg bend. It literally feels like you're riding a sporty touring motorcycle... with no wind protection, of course. Some medium-size riders might complain about having their knees directly on the small fairings under the fuel tank, affecting comfort over long distances. On the plus side, the fairing mounted above the front headlight does a good job of eliminating part of the pressure applied to the rider's chest.
