2008 Buell 1125R Review

9-23-2008

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

As for the frame, there's nothing new to report -- and that's a good thing. Buell frames are renowned for their rigidity, precision and singular design. Among the unique characteristics of the 1125R are an all-aluminum frame with integrated fuel tank, an ultra-radical, 21-degree fork angle, a huge perimeter front brake disc, an exhaust system mounted underneath the engine for a lower center of gravity and a clean, maintenance-free final drive belt.

The fully-adjustable front and rear suspensions are rather comfortable in their softest settings.

Impressive geometry
While the new 1125R is longer than other Buell sportbikes, it sits on a shorter wheelbase than many competitors. It is true that the 1,384-millimeter wheelbase and particularly offset fork angle combine for radical riding dynamics. Yet, despite some instability at high speed due to the light steering, the frame is competent enough to handle the power of the Rotax engine.

Once you get familiar with this bike, you can appreciate its fearsome aggressiveness on twisty roads. With a weight of 170 kilos, it's like the 1125R had wings, which puts a smile on the rider's face every time he or she wrings the throttle. This machine is pretty nimble in tight turns, exiting like a rocket. Yet, I found it perfectly manageable on slick pavement, especially with that precise, fade-free braking system. The torquey engine leads to front-wheel twitchiness at times, so be careful in those situations or you may end up paying for your mistakes.

Comfortable?
The Buell 1125R has the soul of a true sportbike, yet it proves pleasant in daily use. The riding position is not overly taxing, the seat is nicely designed and the fully-adjustable front and rear suspensions are rather comfortable in their softest settings. Unfortunately, despite the new shield installed by engineers, heat generated by the engine at idle becomes uncomfortable for the thighs, especially the right one.

In terms of ergonomics, the 1125R is nearly perfect. The rider makes one with the motorcycle and enjoys instant fun as a result. An analog tachometer and digital speedometer are part of a very comprehensive instrument panel that even includes readouts for average and real-time fuel consumption as well as ambient air temperature. Build quality is great and material selection is on par with other Buell models.

The brand finally has a killer weapon to take on the world's best in the large-displacement sportbike segment.
