2008 Suzuki KingQuad 450 Review (video)

7-23-2008

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

Less displacement, but...
Powering the smaller KingQuad are the same powertrain features that have made the KingQuad 750 one of the best ATVs on the market. The liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine boasts a compact 4-valve cylinder head as well as an electronic fuel injection system. The 48-degree cylinder configuration maximizes fuel delivery and lowers the center of gravity.

The underseat fuel tank also lowers the center of gravity while allowing engineers to position the air box directly above the cylinder for optimum air delivery. Despite being 300-cc smaller and having to pull about the same weight as the 750-cc engine, I have to admit that the little mill surprised me. It fares pretty well in all conditions and delivers true riding fun. Low- and mid-range torque is abundant and, as a bonus, the engine seems to be at ease at higher revs. The steel/titanium exhaust system produces a sweet-sounding note that's hearty enough to enhance the riding experience.

The Suzuki KingQuad 450 is one of the sportiest utility ATVs in the entire industry.

Efficient CVT
Power is sent to the wheels through a CVT-type automatic transmission with high/low forward ranges. The fender-mounted gate-type shifter is ideally positioned and it operates flawlessly. A switch on the right handlebar offers a selection of three different modes: electric 2WD, 4WD and differential-lock 4WD.

The CVT works wonders; it's progressive and durable, allowing faster-than-average accelerations. Furthermore, the Quadmatic system generates little engine braking, which is perfect for such a sporty ATV. Without question, this powertrain is on par with the competition; its efficiency and operating quality make it one of the segment leaders.

With the 2008 KingQuad 450, Suzuki offers a medium-displacement ATV featuring a fully-independent suspension and all the attributes that have made the KingQuad 750 a top contender in its class. It's one of the sportiest utility ATVs in the entire industry. Stylish, nimble and efficiently powered, the KingQuad 450 really is a king.
