2007 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R Road Test

8-17-2007

by Martin Grandé , moto123.com

The fuel tank is quite low compared to the rider's torso, which forces the latter to adopt an uncomfortable crouching position. Meanwhile, the center of gravity has been slightly raised to enhance the bike's responsiveness -- a successful move. I have to admit that, for as long as I have known Kawasaki (early 90s), the frame stiffness and handling capabilities of their ZX motorcycles have always stood out. The combination of a short wheelbase and a redesigned swingarm wonderfully improves stability and riding dynamics. The dual beam aluminum structure extends over the engine block, which makes it less cumbersome on each side (narrow bike).

The ZX lineup offers unparalleled handling.

I did not have the opportunity to ride the ZX-10R on the track, but I was still surprised by the steering precision compared to the 2005 model. Power is linear from 6,500 to 12,500 rpm. The bike stays upright, though the front wheel barely touches the ground, which makes the steering a bit unpredictable. That said, I'm glad to see another manufacturer include a standard steering damper. In my opinion, this little wonder should be mandatory on every new motorcycle with 100+ horsepower. What was considered as a gadget 10 years ago is now an important life-insurance device. Furthermore, Kawasaki gave it a beautiful anodized color that perfectly matches the bike's luster -- a well-executed trick.

As for braking, I was somewhat disappointed. Perhaps my expectations were too high. The petal discs will probably be the next big trend, but not with the rubber oil ducts and factory-installed master cylinder. For track-style riding, I like more aggressiveness and less effort. Granted, if the engine were less brutal, the brakes would be safer for most street riders.

In the end, the main complaint about the overall package is the fact that the 2007 Ninja ZX-10R is very demanding for the rider. Indeed, you must be technically skilled to handle such a bike: the faster it goes, the harder it is to control. This high-performance machine is therefore not suited for all. Only seasoned riders will enjoy it.
