2007 Kawasaki KLX250 Long-Term Review

8-11-2008

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

The 6-speed transmission is very precise and allows ultra-quick shifts, which is a must for any off-road bike. It was designed to offer the best of both worlds: the first, second and third gears are very close to each other for explosive takeoffs, while the sixth gear ratio is just long enough to allow a reasonably-smooth cruising speed on the highway.

While we're on the subject, the KLX250 proves to be quite competent on the highway, reaching a top speed of 135 km/h and offering comfort levels worthy of a 400-cc dual-purpose mount.

In off-road riding, the Kawasaki KLX250 handles like a champion.

A true off-road bike
The perimeter, high-tensile steel frame allows surprising stability in corners. Even though the tires of the KLX are designed for 80-percent off-road use, the bike is more than capable on asphalt-covered winding roads. It can keep pace with a number of motorcycles boasting twice the displacement.

Like every other dual-purpose bike, comfort is not a strength. The narrow seat, lack of protection against the elements and upright riding position quickly become irritating, especially at high speeds. On the other hand, it's a real delight to ride on tortuous gravel roads, where drifting is unbelievably easy to perform.

Well equipped
In off-road riding, the Kawasaki KLX250 handles like a champion. I find it rider-friendly and quite forgiving -- perfect for beginners. Furthermore, the steel fuel tank is protected in the event of a fall by the radiators' plastic air deflectors. A thumb down goes to the lack of grip provided by the factory tires, particularly under the rain. With better off-road rubber, the KLX250 would likely achieve the same performance levels as a true motocross.

Nevertheless, this Kawa has all the tools and ingredients to remain a value leader in the dual-purpose segment. The equipment includes several features that used to be exclusive to more expensive models: a nitrogen-filled, remote reservoir rear shock with 16-position compression and rebound damping and threadless preload adjustability, a rebound-adjustable inverted front fork, front and rear disc brakes, electric start, a tool bag, an analog tachometer and even passenger footpegs.

The 2007 Kawasaki KLX250 is sure to please fans with true off-road performance and more than acceptable on-road dynamics -- all that at a very competitive price.
