2007 Harley-Davidson Night Rod Special Road Test

11-25-2007

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

The hydroformed perimeter frame with dual steel tubes comes straight from the original V-Rods. It was slightly revised to better fit the much sportier Night Rod. Overall rigidity is excellent; in fact, it's the toughest frame ever designed by Harley-Davidson. On the road, the bike proves to be extremely stable in a straight line. Upon entering a corner, however, it becomes a bit reluctant to comply because the huge rear tire constantly fights to keep the bike upright. The Night Rod Special is still very much fun to drive on small backcountry roads where it can taunt a number of sportsbikes in corner exists.

This frame is rigid and allows pleasant riding dynamics.

Safer
Unlike most cruisers, the Night Rod features ultra powerful brakes; they not only make the riding experience more pleasant but they also enhance safety when carrying a passenger. As for the suspension, the Night Rod is equipped with short-travel springs and shocks that sometimes feel a bit dry but never bottom out thanks to a well-calibrated damping system.

The very low seat makes it incredibly easy to straddle this mount. On the other hand, the riding position can only be described as extreme or caricature-like. Only long-legged, long-armed folks will feel comfortable on this bike. The short handlebars, perched atop the front fork, combined with the forward-mounted footpegs make long rides somewhat trying. On the plus side, the seat is nicely padded and just firm enough to make you forget all about it... well, almost.

Sports soul
The size and weight of the Night Rod Special are enough reasons to ride vigilantly during low-speed maneuvers. Fortunately, the flexibility of the engine and the short turning radius come to the rider's rescue. Straddling a Night Rod means putting your game face on and rediscovering your sports soul. This Harley loves high-revving action and delivers breathtaking thrills. Moreover, its killer looks make it a truly unique masterpiece. With a host of exclusive features, the Night Rod Special will appeal to those after a peculiarly-styled, high-performance beast on two wheels.
