2007 BMW R 1200 R Road Test

12-1-2007

by Mark Hacking , Auto123.com

A Stylish and Thoughtful Package
Apart from the surprising performance of the R 1200 R and the unquestioned value of the technology fitted to the bike, the BMW is also a pretty stylish ride.

The roadster look is emphasized by the downward angle of the round headlight and the aforementioned fuel tank design. This aggressive stance is further promoted by the hi-tech appearance of the Telelever and Paralever front and rear suspension, and the meatiness of the 180/55 R17 rear tire.

BMW offers a long list of accessories.

Form without function is pretty much useless, though, so the R 1200 R proves it's more than just a fierce face with a number of admirable qualities.
Although the BMW is fairly wide with a correspondingly wide seat, most riders should find the seating position comfortable for both city riding and longer hauls. The instrument panel is well designed with two bright analogue dials and a clear LCD digital display. The bike tested also featured an optional on-board computer that allows the rider to scroll through information (such as the fuel range and the ambient temperature) with a button on the handlebar.

Again: very thoughtful.

All told, the 2007 BMW R 1200 R - which has a starting price of $16,000 - has a lot going for it. Now, if only BMW can be convinced to lose the conservative approach when it comes to paint schemes (the roadster comes in black, grey or another grey) they would be very close to hitting a home run.

Great ergonomics
Incredibly nimble chassis
Advanced safety technology
Optional on-board computer

Recalcitrant first gear
Not ideal for highway activity

Conservative paint schemes
