World Superbike - Michel Fabrizio and Leon Haslam share wins at Kyalami

5-17-2010

by Marc Cantin , moto123.com

Michel Fabrizio (Ducati) and Leon Haslam (Suzuki) divided the honours during this World Superbike doubleheaders held at Kyalami in South Africa.

In the first round, Fabrizio took the lead at the first bend after a good start from the front row. He then put his head down and built himself a small and eventually insurmountable lead over his sole closest pursuer, fellow Ducati racer Carlos Checa. The veteran rider did put on a bit of a charge, only to see that Fabrizio had something in hand to defend himself, and thus settled for second place.

In a Championship-building move, Leon Haslam made his way into third and all those great points, after deciding that his bike was not as quick as those in front . Pole sitter Cal Crutchlow (Yamaha) blew his start, dropping to ninth on the first lap and never recovering from there.

In the second race, Leon Haslam put on another Championship buiding race, taking the win with a well timed pass of race leader Jonathan Rea (Honda) on the penultimate lap.

Until that late pass, Rea looked on course for a miraculous win from a third row (11th position) start. Unbelievably, Rae was fourth in the first corner, and in the lead by the end of the second lap after passing Max Biaggi (Aprilia), Carlos Checa and hole-shot winne… Leon Haslam.

Haslam dropped to fourth after a slight mistake, but mounted an irresistible attack in the closing laps and secured his third victory of the season.
