Due to a recent decision by the Perry, Fla. County Commission to reverse their original decision to allow racing at the new Blue Rok Raceway, the WPSA PowerSports ATV Championship Tour is unable to hold its ATV racing event in Perry, Fla., June 24-25. As a result, the Tour will run double championship events during the balance of its schedule, beginning July 8-9 in Taylorville, Ill.
"We were looking forward to racing in Florida on the new track there, and we were frankly shocked the County Commission made this decision so close to the event," said PowerSports Entertainment president Scott O'Malley. "This event has been on our schedule for several months, and the county had granted permission to the track owner which it has now chosen to revoke for reasons out of our control.
"After carefully weighing our options with regard to TV production, event promotion and our competitors' schedules, we've decided it's in the best interest of all to run the next three events as double championship weekends," added O'Malley. "This will not affect our television schedule, and we think this represents the best solution going forward. The balance of our schedule is confirmed and we're looking forward to hosting three more world-class double championship weekends."
"We spent months working with the County Attorney and the Commission, and we were told we had the approval to go forward with the race," said Blue Rok Raceway owner Donald Blue. "We performed our due diligence to make this race happen. Then, on Monday, several local landowners complained that the Commission hadn't followed the letter of the law. So, the Commission decided to reverse its original course, and pull the plug on our race. The Commission's mistake, unfortunately, has led to us having to cancel the event.
