AMA SX: Villopoto wins - Reed pays a visit

3-9-2010

by Luc Fradette

The AMA Supercross Series was part of the Daytona Bike week as it presented his latest round at the Daytona Speedway and Ryan Villopoto (Kawasaki) won the event in front of an ecstatic crowd.

To the delight of the fans, injured Chad Reed attempted a return to racing as he recorded the best time in the first qualifying practice. In the second session the Aussie swapped in a rhythm section, flying off the track.

Unfortunately, Reed elected to sit out the rest of the day, indicating that something is still amiss.

In the main event, Villopoto was first right from the start but within the first lap Grant Langston (Yamaha) fell down and the race was almost immediately red-flagged. Grant was taken off the track on a stretcher but further report indicated that the rider was not seriously hurt.

When the 450 Supercross Main Event took off again, Villopoto was back in front while Josh Hill (Yamaha) was second and series’ leader, Ryan Dungey (Suzuki), third.

On lap three, Dungey passed Hill and moved into second all the while Villopoto was looking good out front. At the five lap mark, we now have Villopoto leading, Dungey second, Hill third, and we see Trey Canard (Honda) coming in fourth not long before he finally passes Hill on lap seven.

At the halfway point, Ryan Villopoto looks sharp and he will never be challenged by the riders in the back and, after 20 brutal laps on the Daytona circuit, the Kawasaki rider passes thru the finish line with more than 4.445 seconds in front of Ryan Dungey

Trey Canard, who will be the last one on the podium, is a staggering 37.178 seconds behind the leader.

Ryan Dungey still leads Ryan Villopoto by 20 points in the AMA Supercross standings as they head into round 10 of the series next weekend in Toronto.
