In an effort to keep pace in the all-important large scooter segment, KYMCO is building on the success of the Xciting 500Ri with the more upscale and technologically advanced MyRoad 700i.

A quick reminder: KYMCO (Kwang Yang Motor Company) was founded in 1963, and now ranks as the fifth-largest motorcycle and scooter manufacturer in the world. Its model lineup includes over 40 scooters, a dozen bikes, and more than 20 ATVs. KYMCO products are sold in all five continents, with Beco Motors serving as the official distributor in Canada.


The new 2014 KYMCO MyRoad 700i is a larger-than-life scooter for sophisticated riders looking to live the high life on the freeway and the open road. It offers generous room and storage for two, with the ability to store a pair of medium-size, full-face helmets under the two-tier seat, and small valuables in the lockable front compartment. The passenger foot pegs fold into the bodywork for a sleek and clean look. Keyless start is a cool addition.

Motivation for the 2014 KYMCO MyRoad 700i comes from a 695cc parallel twin-cylinder engine with electronic fuel injection that produces 59 hp and 46 lb-ft of torque. This liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, DOHC unit is mated to a CVT like every competitor.

Two ventilated discs handle braking with dual-piston callipers up front and a single ventilated disc with dual-piston calliper in the rear. Adjustable brake levers and 2-wheel ABS complete the setup. The 2014 KYMCO MyRoad 700i rides on 15'' front and 14'' rear tires spread 1,615 mm apart.

Considering the seat height of 780 mm and the dry weight of 265 kg, this scooter will require special attention at idle and during low-speed manoeuvres -- depending on the rider's size and strength, of course. Making hill starts and parking easier is a hand brake. Both the telescopic front forks and dual rear shocks offer electronic damping adjustment (with three modes controlled via the handlebar) for superior ride quality.

The 2014 KYMCO MyRoad 700i goes up against the BMW C650, Suzuki Burgman 650S, and Honda Silver Wing -- tough competition, indeed. However, KYMCO would not have stepped into the ring without an impressive offering. We look forward to trying it out.
