2008 Honda TRX700XX Preview

10-1-2007

by moto123.com

Since 2002, Honda has been playing a decisive role in the transformation of four-stroke engines, starting with its ultimate CRF450F. The Unicam engine benefits from a unique technology that allows it to generate as much power as a DOHC engine, all this in a lighter, smaller and more balanced configuration. Honda's Unicam is one of the best-selling high-performance four-stroke single-cylinder engines in North America. Considering the intense power sensation produced by a CRF450F, it's easy to imagine the potential of the monstrous 686-cc powerplant of the TRX700XX.

Elsewhere, the five-speed transmission comes with reverse and a manual clutch with traditional oil bath. The direct-line chain final drive benefits from Honda's famous centered setup. This uncommon feature is intended to improve rear-wheel grip under full acceleration while reducing chain stress and wear.

Title contender
In the braking department, the TRX700XX uses two 174-mm ventilated discs up front and a single 200-mm disc in the back. The total weight of this ATV is 230 kilos -- 40 kilos less than a Can-Am Renegade 800, which is also equipped with a fully independent suspension but suffers from a heavy four-wheel drive system. On the other hand, the Polaris Outlaw is 37.3-kg lighter than the TRX700XX despite using a similar independent suspension. Only a comprehensive test will tell us if the additional weight of this new machine has a negative impact on its riding dynamics.

In conclusion, the TRX700XX is redefining the sport ATV segment thanks to an independent rear suspension and the titanic Unicam engine. According to engineers, it will deliver unprecedented levels of performance, smoothness and agility. Yet, despite all that power, Honda claims that its latest offering will be comfortable and user-friendly. The 2008 Honda TRX700XX will definitely be a serious contender for the title of Best New ATV for 2008.
