A hot lap of Phillip Island with Troy Bayliss

"Sometimes you may just roll off the throttle a bit, but it's very close to full speed in fifth. It's a place where you can feel the front slide as you go through the apex. I prepare to brake as late as possible into Honda Corner and back to first gear. Brake hard and just lay it on its side into the apex, keep it as tight as possible and pick it up early, not running it out to the ripple strip.

"From first to second on the exit, hitting the edge of the ripple strip on the right before entering Siberia. You always feel as though you can carry a lot of corner speed through there and on the exit, it hooks up pretty good too. On the exit you just run it out to the edge as far as you can go, holding it up as you approach the fast left hand kink before the Hayshed. Click it into fourth at the left and hold it on and my Ducati sort of wheelstands to the right, picking the front wheel off the ground and it helps me change direction a little bit. As soon as the front touches again on the right into the Hayshed you just roll it off a fraction to let the front bite and get back on it.

"Back to third gear for Lukey Heights. It's a good little corner but it has a few little bumps and you have to be careful on the brakes going over the bump on the entry. A lot of people use this as a good passing spot into MG. I like it. You come in at about two thirds track and then fire out of MG in first then short shift to second and third. Out of there you pick the bike up as early as you can and get the power down, hitting fourth. You start to lay it into the last corner while still hard on the throttle, just roll off a little to steady it and then it's back onto the straight.

"This is one of the most important turns on the whole track. A lot of people make the mistake of finishing the corner off too much and finishing the exit at the middle of the track. I like to hold it up a bit longer and run it further down along the edge of the track. It makes a little bit of a difference I think anyway. Hopefully all this work produces a halfway decent lap time and a race result that sees me on the podium. I'm looking forward to heading home and putting on a show.
