F1: Lewis Hamilton from start to finish; Jenson Button in front of Rubens Barrichello

9-27-2009

by Geneviève Trudeau Senécal

Lewis Hamilton stayed up front from start to finish Sunday night, in Singapore, and redeemed himself from two weeks ago, when he crashed in the last lap of the race.

Hamilton won in front of Timo Glock’s Toyota and Fernando Alonso’s Renault. Both Glock and Alonso’s results are expected to raise the moral of their troops as they both register a season’s best.

As for championship contenders Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, who respectively started from 12th and 10th position on the grid, they finished 5th and 6th in Singapore, meaning Button still increases his lead of one point over his teammate.

Brakes were the major issue in this race as it is believed to be the cause of Alguersuari, Webber, Sutil and Grosjean’s forfeit. Jenson Button was also experimenting issues with his brakes at the end of the race, making the Brawn Team cautious for both cars. Barrichello finished one second behind his teammate.

High temperatures and humidex level also played an important role in this very demanding race which got close of the two hour limit, running 1h56 minutes.

Yet another race to forget for Ferrari as Kimi Raikkonen struggles to get the car back... in 10th place. Giancarlo Fisichella did finish the race, but in no better position than 13th.

Sebastian Vettel (4th), Heikki Kovalainen (7th) and Robert Kubica (8th) – who was running with a new and improve BMW-Sauber car – completed the top-eight of this light-flooded race in the streets of Singapore.

Alonso dedicated this podium, the first of the season for the Renault Team, to his manager and ex-director Flavio Briatore who was imposed a life-lasting-ban from the Formule 1 World for cheating, earlier this week.
