Carlos Checa (Althea Ducati) has stretched his advantage at the top of the World Superbike Championship by more than 72 points, after claiming his second consecutive double this time at Misano.
Starting from second position in the first race, Checa found himself tumbling down the order during the opening turns soon following Leon Haslam (BMW), Max Biaggi (Aprilia) and pole sitter Tom Sykes (Kawasaki).
Biaggi passed Haslam on the second lap, before immediately building an advantage to those behind him.
Checa did not wait long before moving forward, passing both Sykes and Haslam and finding himself in second place by lap four, but more than a second behind Biaggi.
At the midway stage, the Althea Ducati rider was just behind Biaggi, waiting for the Italian to make a mistake, which he did on Lap 12 by running slightly wide. Checa muscled his way into the lead.
Biaggi held on for a brave second place, less than a second behind Checa but third place Marco Melandri (Yamaha) crossed the line some 17 seconds behind.
The Spaniard then took his eighth win of the season – and his third double of the year -, after winning a shortened second race at Misano.
With the race reduced to 14 laps following an earlier red flag caused when both Marco Melandri and Leon Camier fell separately at turn one, the bikes landing in dangerous positions, Checa, who had been leading at that time, looked to have a competition on his hands after Biaggi burst into the lead from the restart and established an early lead.
However, just as Checa was beginning to pressure Biaggi for the lead, the Italian ran wide on lap eight and allowed his rival through into an insurmountable lead.
Dropping almost two seconds, though Biaggi was safe in second place, it enabled Checa to establish a sizeable lead that he would carry to the chequered flag.
A fantastic result for veteran Noriyuki Haga who finished third; representing his first podium with PATA Aprilia.
