Suzuki Burgman 650 2009 Review

8-28-2009

by Marc Cantin , moto123.com

As if to get the Burgman closer to bike behaviour, the engine is bolted to the chassis and a classic swingarm handles rear suspension duties. This is a departure from the more common scooter configuration where the whole engine-tranny assembly is also mounted on the swingarm and pivots along with it when going over bumps, thereby increasing unsprung weight at the rear, and hurting rear end handling and overall comfort.

The aluminium rims mount a 120/70-R15 tire in front and a 160/70-R14 donut at the rear. You have to love the amount of space for rider and passenger

Scooter or motorcycle – a bit of both!
A simple steel-tube frame links the 41mm front fork and the motorcycle style swingarm with the heart of the machine, the engine-tranny assembly. Impressive ABS-equipped brakes feature dual 260mm discs with four-piston calipers in front, and a single 210mm disc and dual-piston caliper at the rear. The front suspension is non adjustable, while the spring preload can be adjusted at the rear to match stiffness with true loads, for increased comfort and safety.

The aluminium rims feature a 120/70-R15 tire in front and a 160/70-R14 donut at the rear. These tire sections are awfully close to mid engine motorcycles, if not larger, and are a sign of excellent road holding and safety – no weak weenies here!

Comfy ergos
With a more than complete array of mechanical features, it was hardly surprising that the ergonomics of the Executive model reach such a high level. To start with, this rather long and solidly built machine offers two spacious and comfortable seats, each with their own backrest, and with room enough to move your feet forward and back on the front floorboards as you spend a few hours touring around on the machine. The automotive-style display features an analog tachometer and digital speedometer, plus the usual fuel and temperature gauges, LCD odometer/trip meters, and clock.

Storage space is not a problem, with a 56L lockable (And illuminated) compartment under the seat (Good for two integral helmets), plus various glove box and other stowage space in the facia, as well as a practical 12 volt DC accessory outlet. And there is more: electrically-controlled windshield, electrically retractable side mirrors, and heated grips and seat that all add up to an impressive package.
