Cargo rack
While most scooters are equipped with a cargo rack, you should really consider this option if it's not the case. Get a good rack and, more importantly, solid straps that will effectively secure your briefcase or backpack. If you go with a milk crate or some other makeshift rack, make sure to use plates and bolts to prevent it from sliding around.

Remember that you'll be adding weight to the back of the scooter, so ride accordingly. If you overload the tail, the nose may lift upon takeoff. Be careful!
Some models, like Vespas and Stellas, also come with a front rack. Once again, you should use solid straps that will tightly secure your cargo.
Rear top case
There comes a time when that underseat compartment is no longer enough, like when you want to store an extra full-face helmet. A rear top case becomes a must, preferably a lockable one that allows you to keep a helmet, groceries, electronic gadgets or other important stuff away from thieves.
Just like a cargo rack, a rear top case will add weight to the back of your scooter, so adjust your riding style.

Locking device
While premium scooters now offer antitheft devices, the fact is that you can never be too careful. Take an extra five seconds to lock the handlebars, even when you leave your scooter unattended for just a few moments.
If you live in the city and leave your machine in the parking lot of your office or apartment building, find a well-lit space where thieves won't go unnoticed. Install a chain lock (for more flexibility) or a U-lock if you happen to have a fixed pole nearby.
