Safety, a priority

More user-friendly bikes
In the case of the 2007 GSX-R1000, Suzuki engineers introduced a fantastic new feature. It's a switch mounted near the throttle that allows the rider to select one of three different engine management programs (Dry, Wet, Mix). This innovation boosts performance levels while reducing the risk of falling since engine power is easier to modulate. I had the opportunity to test this system on the track and I can tell you that it performs exceptionally well. The GSX-R goes from being extremely docile to being ultra aggressive at the mere push of a button. In the more user-friendly mode, the bike is very easy to control despite its superior sportiness; even under hard acceleration, the rear end of the vehicle sticks to the tarmac. With this system, the GSX-R is a lot less scarier for beginners who want to tame the beast.

The Suzuki GSX-R1000 is remarkably easy to tame.

A recent study showed that motorcycle crashes involving another vehicle are mostly frontal collisions. That's why Honda designed an energy absorption system similar to a car's. It protects the head and upper body of the rider during severe frontal impacts.

Hazardous roads
The road is full of pitfalls. Obviously, potholes, bumps and debris can lead to a crash, but in some cases, the rider's judgement is really at fault. Suddenly applying the brakes is the worst thing you can do. If you have no other choice but to hit a pothole or an obstacle, shift your weight to the back and gently lift the front wheel while accelerating just before said obstacle. As a result, the impact on the front wheel will be lessened. Take time to get used to your motorcycle, always look far ahead to anticipate the incoming challenges and never exceed the limits afforded by your experience level. Also, never forget that the best way to prevent a crash is to avoid the maneuvers leading up to it.

Ride safe!
