SAAQ: new tax on the way for riders?

12-15-2011

by moto123.com

Motorcycle riders in Quebec won't have to pay higher registration fees in 2012, but they might deal with a new tax during their future transactions.

Last Friday, an expert committee appointed by the Société de l'Assurance Automobile du Québec (SAAQ) published a series of recommendations following a study on how to manage the SAAQ's finances more effectively.

Insurance contributions based on engine displacement and motorcycle type could start as early as next year with fees of $75-225 for anyone buying a new or used bike:
  • 125 cc or less and traffic-limited motorcycles: $75
  • 126 to 400 cc: $125
  • Over 400 cc: $225
  • Sport bikes: $225
Another recommendation calls for a $32 hike in licence costs in the case of people who have violated the Highway Safety code and accrued demerit points, either with their car or motorcycle.

Riders across the province are already screaming, taking to phone lines, Internet forums and social media by storm to criticize the government's stubborn attitude and constant attempts to rob them.

The SAAQ will announce in the upcoming weeks if it will approve the recommendations of the expert committee and if the new measures will come into effect for 2012.
