Then there are the numerous local charities which benefit from this event, several of which, use it as their major fundraiser for the year. The local Rotary Club understands this, which is why they control the local campsite and charge "rather modest" rates for camping.

Another worthy cause which was creating quite a stir at the event was the Joe Chithalen Memorial Musical Instrument lending library (JCMMILL). This charity was established in 1999 in memory of the well known and respected musician, Joe Chithalen. Joe died of anaphylactic shock from a peanut allergy whilst on tour in Amsterdam.

His memory is kept alive today by the library bearing his name which offers the gift of music by allowing musicians to sign out musical instruments at no charge, much like you would sign out a book at your local library.

This year, an amazing lineup of musicians was on hand to play at an open air concert, including none other than John Kay & Steppenwolf, who were playing their very last Canadian performance in the town. Personally, for a man that sang one of the best ever rock anthems "Born to be Wild", I can't think of a better final venue.

Of course, bikers are not only well known for their charitable donations, they are also famous for their sense of fun. At this year's event, there were several who were out to entertain the crowds. I saw everything from bikers with their best friend (the dog) riding on the back seat wearing goggles, to a sidecar carrying a big funny looking furry creature who was wowing all the young children.

I also met a charming young couple who had decided to wed right there on Friday the 13th. With the gentleman dressed in his finest bow tie and black leather chaps, he made the perfect groom to his beautiful white leather clad young wife. My congratulations go out to both of you, and may you have many happy wedding anniversaries back at Port Dover.

Of course, whenever you get a huge gathering of people like this, you are going to require a little policing, and so the boys (and girls) in blue were out in force. Numerous chapters of Angels were present and no doubt a few plain-clothed police officers were paying slightly closer attention to them, but I saw absolutely no cause for concern anywhere.
