Norton going MotoGP racing in 2012?

8-19-2010

by Marc Cantin , moto123.com

Maybe – almost probably, by wiggling through openings in the new MotoGP rules aimed at adding more bikes on the grid.

A presence in MotoGP would do wonders for the Norton brand image, given what the Norton website describes plans such as: "Future development (That) will also lead to the introduction of all-new modern motorcycles and will represent the ultimate expression of the Norton brand".

The world economy cannot sustain a 24-bike grid of true MotoGP racers from major manufacturers and factory-assisted teams, so series promoter Dorna has developed rules to allow street-based engines in racing chassis on to the grid, using an equivalency formula to balance performance with Full Monte MotoGP bikes, and thus create the best possible show. Oh, and 1000cc engines will be back in MotoGP by 2012, a reversal from the earlier shrinkage from 990cc to 800 aimed at limiting performance but only increasing costs instead.

Technical and rules issues will continue to complicate the famous brand’s return to the track, but two bikes with the grand old logo, as well as other rumoured street-related racers from Aprilia and BMW (What about Triumph?), will certainly add much-needed interest to MotoGP.

Stay tuned!
