MotoGP: Stoner wins wet Silverstone race

by moto123.com

Honda’s Casey Stoner doubles up his results at the British Grand Prix, by winning the event at Silverstone and moving into the MotoGP championship lead as Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) crashed out.

Stoner’s team-mate Andrea Dovizioso finished in second while crowd favourite and local hero Colin Edwards (Tech 3Yamaha) was on the podium, despite his injuries sustained nine days ago.

Lorenzo had a great start, jumping from third on the grid to first closely followed by Dovizioso, who took second from pole sitter Stoner.

Then the two Honda riders took over from Lorenzo into first and second, while Gresini Honda's Marco Simoncelli was right behind the leading trio.

The Australian moved around Dovizioso at the start of the second lap and began distancing himself from the charging pack, while the other Honda Rider began to feel the pressure from Simoncelli and Lorenzo.

Simoncelli fell back to fourth when he ran off the road briefly at Abbey, allowing Lorenzo to attack Dovizioso.

But on lap eight, the world champion had a violent high-side at Abbey, ending his race and halting an unbroken run of finishes dating back to the 2009 Australian GP. Only three laps later, at the same spot, Simoncelli would end his day the same way.

By now, Stoner was comfortably clear at the front and went on to clinch his fourth win of the 2011 season and establish an 18-point lead over Lorenzo.

Dovizioso cruised to second, with Edwards elevated to an outstanding third despite his recent injury.

Nicky Hayden was fourth for Ducati, ahead of Alvaro Bautista, who took Suzuki's best result of a tough year in fifth.

The other works Yamaha rider Ben Spies had a heavy crash and was taken to the medical centre for checks on back pain.
