MotoGP: More bikes and venues for 2012

1-12-2011

by Luc Fradette

MotoGP commercial boss Carmelo Ezpeleta is adamant that the starting grid will be back up to 22 bikes for 2012 and that Delhi and Austin, Texas could become new venues on the future calendar.

In 2012, the current 800cc engines will be replaced by 1000cc units, and production-derived engines will be permitted which will allow a decrease in costs and an increase in participation.

Ezpeleta insisted that, even though the new rules will see the MotoGP move closer onto World Superbike territory, there was no conflict between his Dorna group and World Superbike promoter Infront.

MotoGP's falling grids in recent years are due in part to Kawasaki's withdrawal and Suzuki now cutting back to a single bike for 2011.

MotoGP supremo Carmelo Ezpeleta has confirmed that the new Formula 1 venues in Delhi and Austin are in talks to host grand prix motorcycle racing from 2012 and 2013 respectively.
