Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo took an important victory today at the Mugello, by defeating in the ultimate laps of the race Honda’s Casey Stoner at the MotoGP Italian Grand Prix.
Right from the start, Stoner had looked as though he would cruise to another victory as he powered away from pole to built an impressive gap in front of his pursuers Lorenzo and the Australian’s Honda team-mate Andrea Dovizioso.
During the second half of the race, Stoner saw his pace slowly fading as Lorenzo was picking up more pace, even setting a new lap record as he closed in before slicing ahead six laps from the end.
The Yamaha ace went on to take his first victory since Jerez and keep his and Yamaha's title hopes alive.
Dovizioso battled past Stoner to take second with two laps to go, and then narrowly held off his team-mate on the charge to the line, which means Stoner's points lead over Lorenzo is cut from 28 to 19.
Last race winner at Assen, Ben Spies (Yamaha) and Gresini Honda's Marco Simoncelli completed the top5 of the day, while Valentino Rossi (Ducati) fought through from 12th on the grid to sixth.
