Honda President and CEO, Takeo Fukui, confirmed today that the company is developing a battery-powered electric motorcycle that emits no CO2.

In 2004, Honda unveiled a fuel cell scooter prototype, using the Honda FC Stack technology.

According to the Press Communiqué, Honda has embarked on a continuous program to develop environment-friendly technologies, and apply them to products that will attract buyers.

Honda believes that batteries can be better utilized in the area of motorcycles, which are often used over short distances. In fact, Honda has been developing electricity-powered scooters since the mid-80s.

In 2004, Honda unveiled a fuel cell scooter prototype, using the Honda FC Stack technology. The same year, they also showed a hybrid scooter and an electric moped, developed as prototypes for eventual mass production. The 50 cc hybrid scooter prototype employed both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor, with ample storage space left over. The electric moped used a 360kW battery, and offered performance comparable to that of a gasoline-powered moped.

Honda is aiming to introduce the fully electric motorcycle to the market in approximately two years, and expects that the technology could be used in commercial as well as individual applications.
