AD Boivin Explorer First Impressions (video)

4-15-2008

by Pascal Bastien , moto123.com

Fans of two-wheelers will be happy to know that it is now possible to ride safely even during wintertime. That's right: your off-road, enduro or supermoto bike no longer has to hibernate. You can have fun in the snow thanks to the new and revolutionary Explorer system!

Explorer is designed to convert any motorcycle into a true snow bike.

This unique system was entirely developed by the engineers at AD Boivin, a fast-growing company from Levis, near Quebec City. This manufacturer made a name for itself when it introduced the Snow Hawk, the only snow motorcycle in the industry. A number of notable modifications have since been made to further improve the machine, which goes to show you how AD Boivin works relentlessly to exceed customer expectations.

Well designed
With about 10 years of experience in the development of track systems and monoskis, AD Boivin is launching an all-new technology designed to convert any motorcycle into a true snow bike. Moto123.com had the opportunity to try out the Explorer system in fairly tough conditions, with strong winds and deep snow. Without further adieu, here are our first impressions.

AD Boivin had put at our disposal a pair of 450-cc off-road bikes equipped with their famous system. The latter takes about an hour to install and requires no modification whatsoever. The wheelbase can be adjusted in a flash to improve the system's effectiveness in tougher riding conditions: a shorter wheelbase will offer better drifting ability, while a longer wheelbase will allow greater control over harsh terrain.

Let's hit the open field
Much to my surprise, riding an Explorer-equipped motorcycle didn't feel that much different from a regular bike. True, you have to use more balance at first and learn how to trust the ski. However, getting used to it and feeling at ease only took a few short minutes, so I was able to quickly test the limits of the machine. For a short while, though, my eyes couldn't believe it: I was riding a bike in the middle of a field, zigzagging through small hills covered by three feet of white powder.

Getting used to it and feeling at ease only took a few short minutes.
